  ‘Almost enough,’ Edge allowed, his quiet tone emanating more menace than any enraged bellow would have done.

  Kelly swung his rifle as Sullivan went for his gun.

  ‘No!’ Garcia pleaded as the half-breed moved.

  The whore gasped.

  But none of the whites was the target for the ball of ice-cold rage expanding by the moment in Edge’s belly. As he approached the mortally wounded Apache sub-chief, he stooped and grasped the handle of a saber. The weapon had been hurled from the train in one of the two explosions; sooted black, but undamaged.

  The Mescalero looked up at the tall man without fear. With nothing to lose, he expressed arrogant defiance through his pain.

  ‘It gave us much pleasure,’ he croaked. ‘To destroy in flames that which the White Eyes value too highly.’

  ‘Maybe it should have burned first chance it had,’ Edge replied cryptically, recalling once more the grave on the bank of the Rio Grande.

  Then he raised the saber high above his head. And folded forward as he swung it down. His dark-skinned, thickly stubbled face expressed emotion now. Hatred and fury were carved into every sparse line. His eyes glinted with a diamond-hard brightness.

  The blade slashed into the Indian’s throat. And sliced a vicious wound down the front of his torso: all the way to the base of the belly. A crimson torrent gushed from between the lips of the massive wound.

  And the face of Edge at once resumed its impassive set.

  ‘Like with me and the lieutenant who took my woman,’ Sullivan growled. ‘It showed you needed that.’

  ‘My God, he was gonna die anyway!’ the whore gasped. ‘Did you have to kill him so brutally?’

  ‘Maybe I wanted to see if he was red inside,’ Edge replied evenly, allowing the saber to fall. ‘We going to round up some fresh ponies and head for Fort Hope?’

  ‘I’ll take care of it,’ Kelly responded quickly, relieved to have an order of some kind with which to comply.

  ‘Of course he’s red inside!’ the whore snapped, turning from the awesome sight of the new corpse. ‘The color of a man’s skin don’t make any difference to—’

  ‘Proves something, though,’ the half-breed cut in. ‘Story of my life, I figure.’

  ‘What is that, senor?’ Garcia asked.

  The thin lips curled back to show the familiar humorless grin. ‘Every Black Cloud don’t have a silver lining.’
